The best ideas are the ones that float. For Project Recoop, this was literally true. When Purina discovered how many chickens drown every year in floods, we reinvented the way chickens are housed by designing a coop that floats.
Our idea was inspired by Sharai, a Purina customer. After devastating floods destroyed two of her coops, a team at Purina stepped in to help prevent it from happening again. We designed a new kind of coop that would float with rising waters. With this new innovation, Sharai should have less to worry about during future storms. Watch her story.
We built our coop from the ground up, starting with a typical floating dock. Poles cemented into the ground secure the coop on two corners that are designed to prevent it from drifting away. After the coop was built, we tested it by filling an above-the-ground pool with four feet of water, and the design worked.
We constructed the chicken home almost entirely out of recycled materials from used Purina feed tubs. We know Mother Earth has given us so much, so we’re doing our part to sustain what we already have.
